Our History
In 2022, Yusaku Tanaka, an astrophysics major at the University of California Berkeley, established Curascopium.
In 2023, team members were recruited from the University of California, Berkeley, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Tokyo, and the University of Tsukuba.
In May 2025, Curascopium was officially incorporated as a specified nonprofit corporation (NPO) in Japan.
Currently, the team is composed of students from the U.S., Japan, and Europe with diverse backgrounds and academic interests.
Our Purpose
“Making astrophysics accessible to visually impaired people”
We are currently partnering with several organizations in the U.S. and Japan, including the University of Tsukuba Special Needs School, the University of Tsukuba, and the Hubble Observatory, to create novel events that can be enjoyed by both visually impaired individuals and those who are not.

Our Projects
Astronomy lecture for visually impaired students
An interactive lecture was held for visually impaired, second-year students at the University of Tsukuba Special Needs High School. The aim was to deepen their understanding of astronomy in a non-visual way, to share the excitement of scientific investigation, and to stimulate their interest in pursuing higher education.
Inclusive planetarium
In collaboration with the Sendai Astronomical Observatory and advisor Dr. Yoichi Ochiai from the University of Tsukuba, we are currently developing a next-generation planetarium that we hope will be a moving experience for all.
